What is the Transient Theology Project?
The Transient Theology Project originally began as an undergraduate research project designed and conducted by Soup Dempsey, a transgender Catholic studying Theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. The research, which examines the intersections between process philosophy, Christian theology, queer theory, and the lived experiences of trans+ Christians, was compiled into a zine — a small-circulation, self-published magazine — that features art by transgender Christians and aims to serve as a guide for those who are trying to navigate the tensions between their Christian faith and their non-cisgender identities and expressions.
Given the ways in which non-cisgender identities and expressions have been understood as not only ‘abnormal’ but supposedly immoral in many Christian spheres, this project aims to offer a constructive theology based in process thought, queer theory, and the lived realities of transgender and non-binary people. This project is critical and timely, especially due to the current anti-trans legislation (for example, Ohio HB 454) which directly impacts the quality of life for transgender individuals. This legislation, in tandem with anti-trans rhetoric, is understood to emerge from a particular fundamentalist notion of religious ethics; thus, this project will aim to provide inspiration to transgender Christians who are especially struggling with reconciling their faith lives and gender identities within the current socio-political climate. The first issue of the Transient Theology Zine was a massive success, reaching over 10 different countries with 80+ audience members ordering a grand total of over 100 physical copies. Seeing as the first issue garnered an overwhelming amount of support and appreciation, Soup has decided to continue the project with a second issue, submissions for which are now open! |
